Libya: Air traffic controllers’ strike forces closure of regional airspace

The airspace of Libya’s western region was Thursday closed to traffic following a strike by air traffic controllers there in protest against the “bombing” of Tripoli airport.

PANA reports that about 90% of aircraft parked at Tripoli airport were destroyed after militants launched dozens of rockets in clashes between the Islamist militias and their ex-rebel rivals.

The attacks also caused huge damage to airport facilities and resulted in the closure of the airspace for the fifth consecutive day.

The Misrata (east) and Maitigua (suburb of Tripoli) airports were also closed because of the crisis.
