Libya, Egypt to set up joint fishing venture

Libya and Egypt are working to create a joint venture for fishing in Libyan waters, a senior Egyptian Foreign Ministry official, Mr. Ahmed Ragheb, said following the 11th session of the Libyan-Egyptian Commission held in Cairo.

At the meeting, Libya informed the Egyptian authorities of its plan to recruit 10,000 Egyptian fishermen to operate Libyan fishing vessels, in a bid to stop illegal fishing by Egyptian fishermen in the Libyan waters.

Egyptian vessels were boarded in Libya several times and then released after paying a symbolic fines for fishing without permission.

The Libyan delegation, led by the Director of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Al-Badri, had sought the cooperation of the Egyptian authorities to stop Egyptian fishermen from fishing without permission in Libyan waters.
