Libyan assets stashed abroad estimated at US$41b

Some US$41 billion have been fraudulently stashed away in several countries, including Switzerland, by officials of the defunct regime of the late Muammar Gaddafi, according to the country’s deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shakur.

He said here Monday that the funds were illegally squirreled away by 400 officials of the former regime.

Shakur said the funds, which he alleged were stolen from the Libyan treasury, were currently being withdrawn without the knowledge of the current government.

“These funds need to be monitored by specialised international companies and not by three persons designated by Parliament to do the job and get paid up to 10 per cent of the money recovered,” he said.

Libya’s frozen assets abroad are estimated at US$120 billion
