Mauritius: 1m tourists expected in 2014

Mauritius expects to receive a total of 1,030,000 tourists in 2014, representing a 3.7 per cent increase over the 993,106 in 2013, according to the latest bulletin issued Tuesday by Statistics Mauritius.

The bulletin indicated that the number of tourist arrivals during the first quarter 2014 increased by 2.6% to 354,287, compared to that of 2013

Despite fewer number of tourists from France and Reunion, the two countries remained the top tourist generating countries, contributing 28.5 per cent and 15.1 per cent respectively, of all tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2014.

Statistics Mauritius also compared arrivals in Mauritius to a few selected tourist destinations in the Indian Ocean.

It said Mauritius registered a decrease of 1 per cent in tourist arrivals while Maldives and Sri Lanka registered 9 per cent and 24.8 per cent increase respectively.

Seychelles, on the other hand, experienced a decline of 2.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2014.

According to the Bank of Mauritius, the gross tourism earnings decreased by 4.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2014, compared to the same period in 2013.  

The tourism industry in Mauritius employs a total of 28,536 persons.
