The number of foreign residents in Tunisia between 2019 and 2024 reached 14,570, most of whom are from Sub-Saharan Africa.
The main motivations for migration are studies and the search for employment, according to the results of the 2024 census by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa top the list (33.6%), followed by those from Maghreb countries, Libya (13.2%), Algeria (9.1%), and other Arab countries (17.9%).
Among European countries, France ranks first with 8%, followed by Italy with 2.8%.
Foreign residents in Tunisia are mainly concentrated in Tunis (37.3%), Ariana (18.2%), and coastal cities such as Sousse (11.3%), Medenine (5.8%), and Sfax (5.2%).
According to the same source, the lowest rates of migrants are found in the governorates of Siliana, Zaghouan, and Tozeur.
The main reasons for migration are professional (27%), family-related (23%), and educational (23%).
The INS report indicates that 33.2% of foreign residents were able to access the labor market between 2019 and 2024.
Regarding education levels, statistics show that 42.5% of foreigners have higher education, 31% have secondary education, 8.7% have primary education, and 17.8% are illiterate, according to the same source.
