Nigeria enhances airport security on 9/11 anniversary

Nigerian aviation authorities said they have installed modern security equipment at the country’s main gateway Murtala Muhammed International Airport in the economic capital of Lagos and other airports across the country.

According to the spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Yakubu Dati, the equipment are aimed at enhancing safety and security at the airports.

He listed such equipment as X-ray scanning machines, cargo screening machines, carry-on screening machines, hand-held metal detectors, 3-D body scanners, hold baggage screening machines, walk-through metal detectors and CCTV cameras.

Airport security has attracted higher attention since 11 Sept. 2001 when three of the four planes hijacked by terrorists flew into the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon building in Virginia, while the fourth was forced down by passengers in Pennsylvania.

FAAN’s announcement of the enhanced security at Nigerian airports coincided with the 13th anniversary of those deadly attacks by the al-Qaeda terrorists
