Nigeria: NEPAD signs MOU with Japan on infrastructure dev.

The South Africa-based New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure and agricultural development.

NEPAD said in a statement made available to PANA here Friday that the agreement was signed on the sidelines of the just concluded maiden edition of the Japan-Africa Business Forum in Tokyo.

“Priority areas of cooperation will focus on the implementation and monitoring of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), in particular project preparation and evaluation,” the statement explained.

PIDA is a strategic framework for the development of regional and continental infrastructure in critical sector of the economy.

These include Energy, Transport, Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and Trans-boundary Water, so as to better connect and integrate the continent.

The two development agencies will also work together on capacity development for the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and joint cooperation on JICA’s initiatives on agriculture, such as the Coalition for Africa Rice Development (CARD), within the CAADP framework.

CARD is a consultative group of bilateral donors and international organisations working in collaboration with rice-producing African countries.

Its goal is to support the efforts of African countries to double rice production on the continent to 28 million tons per annum by 2018.

NEPAD Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Mayaki signed for the Agency, while the Senior Vice President of JICA), Mr Hideaki Domichi, signed for the organisation.
