Nigeria Police to enhance community policing in 7 cities

The Nigeria Police will invest 5.738 billion naira in a new initiative to enhance security and community policing in seven cities across the nation — Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Maiduguri and Onitsha.

Giving details of the police investment Tuesday, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua s aid in his budget proposals to a joint session of the national assembly here tha t the proposal was aimed at making the police force reduce crime by 40% in the se v en cities over the next year.

He also disclosed that the Interior Ministry would invest 1.8 billion naira in p rison infrastructure rehabilitation to improve the security of the prisons and p r ovide better facilities for re-orienting convicted felons for rehabilitation int o society.

On work and housing, Yar’Adua said the relevant ministry would complete the cons truction and rehabilitation of 3,293-kilometre length of roads. Under the FERMA p rogramme, 10,676 kilometres of federal roads would be kept in motorable conditio n under the Retainership Programme, and 20,000 kilometres of roads would undergo e mergency repair work.

He said the Zonal Intervention Roads project would cover a total of about 2,400 kilometres of roads, adding that the federal government was also committed to ac c elerating the enhancement of road works by maintaining 10,000 kilometres of road s every year for the next three years.

On power generation, the President said “We are increasing investment in power g eneration by enhancing NNPC’s ability to provide 1.2 billion SCF of gas to the d o mestic market, so as to ensure that this Administration can deliver 6000 MW of p o wer by the end of 2009.
