‘Nigeria’s GSM subscriber base hits 113 million’

The growth of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry has been phenomenal, with the mobile phone subscriber base now standing at 113 million and the industry’s investment profile at US$25 billion, according to an official of the regulatory Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Eugene Juwah.

The local media Sunday quoted Mr. Juwah as saying in the capital city of Abuja Saturday night that the country had a paltry 450,000 lines in 2000, before the introduction of the global system for mobile telecommunications (GSM).

“Presently, investment stands at about $25 billion and active lines are well over 113 million and we are still counting,” he was quoted to have said.

Nigeria, with a population of 160 million, has four GSM providers: MTN, Airtel, Globacom and Etisalat.
