Sudanese President describes US sanctions on his country as immoral

Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir has described US sanctions on his country as “criminal and morally wrong”.

Speaking at the inauguration of some development projects in northern Sudan region, including the rehabilitation of railway locomotives in partnership with Chinese and Korean companies, President Bashir said his country’s railway sector had been hurt by the sanctions.

He said the sanctions have also “caused extensive damages” to the sector, saying they represented “a crime against the Sudanese people.”

However, President Bashir said his government was poised to rehabilitate the sector, notwithstanding the US sanctions, with the help of its East Asian friends.

The sanctions imposed by the US on Sudan since 1997 restrict U.S. trade and investment between the two nations and block the assets of the Sudanese government and certain officials.
