TICAD 8: Minister of Economy meets with president of Tunisia-Japan Chamber of Commerce

Minister of Economy and Planning Samir Saied, on Saturday, stressed the need to prepare well the project files that will be presented during the eighth edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8), to be held in Tunisia in 2022.

During a meeting with President of the Tunisia-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Hedi Ben Abbes, he stressed the need for coordination with the public and private sectors.

The preparation of projects requires special attention to their technical aspects and legal frameworks especially projects to be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

He stressed the importance of this international event, which requires careful preparation at all levels to benefit economically, through partnerships with large companies to achieve projects with high profit and a positive impact on development in Tunisia.

The Minister mentioned the importance of establishing Tunisian-Japanese strategic partnerships to move towards the African market. The continent represents a promising market especially for sectors in which Tunisia has acquired great experience, namely the health sector, the pharmaceutical industry, the automotive industry and technology.

For his part, Ben Abbas said preparatory meetings are held regularly and at an increasing pace with all the parties concerned, in order to set the conditions for good preparation of this event, especially at the level of diversification of sectors.

Tunisia will be the second African country after Kenya to host TICAD in August 2022, following the decision adopted in 2016 to hold this event alternately in Japan and an African country.

About 50 heads of State and government and 10,000 Japanese and African participants are expected to attend the conference, Ben Abbes pointed out, noting that Japan earmarked $1 billion for investment in Africa at the last TICAD.

The amount could reach $30 billion at the 2022 conference, according to his projections.
