Total electricity production down 5% at end of May 2023

Total electricity generation fell by 5% to 6912 GWh (excluding captive consumption) at the end of May 2023, according to the Conjoncture énergétique report published by the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy.

Production for the local market remained virtually unchanged.

It should be noted that Algeria’s electricity purchases covered 13% of the local market’s needs in the first five months of the year. STEG continues to account for the lion’s share of electricity generation, with 99% of national production.

Electricity generated from natural gas (STEG + IPP) decreased by 5%, while renewable energy did not exceed 2.5% of total electricity generation.

Electricity sales increased by 2%, with sales to medium-voltage customers growing by 1%. However, sales to high-voltage consumers fell by 8%, according to the same source.

Indeed, industrial customers remain the largest consumers of electricity, accounting for 62% of total demand from high and medium voltage customers.

The majority of sectors recorded a fall in sales, particularly paper and publishing (-20%) and the extractive industries (-13%). On the other hand, sales increased in water pumping and sanitation (+15%), tourism (+16%) and agricultural pumping (+8%).
