Sabeur Dhaouadi, Tunisair’s Safety Management Director, said that the overall situation of the national carrier is constantly improving.
In an interview with to Africanmanager.ar on Thursday, October 3, 2024, he claimed that the restructuring program has helped to develop its performance and revitalize its business.
He assured that the Tunisian airline is concerned about the safety of passengers, airspace and crew, stressing that it is one of the companies recognized for its excellence in the field of safety.
Dhaouadi added that the national airline has invested a lot in safety programs, as it provides frequent and regular training for all its employees, stressing that training plays an important role in improving the safety of pilots, as it provides them with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate the aircraft safely.
On another aspect, he explained that the safety of the aviation process is extremely important because any accident could have devastating consequences on human lives and on the commercial image of the airlines, which encourages the national carrier to choose high quality safety training services for its employees, including pilots and all staff.
Two new aircraft on the program
With regard to the national airline’s fleet, he said that it currently comprised 19 aircraft, two A330s, two A319s and 15 A320s.
In this context, he recalled that between 2021 and 2023, the national carrier acquired 9 new aircraft, of which 5 A320 neo and 4 A320 ceo were leased.
He revealed that the airline is considering the acquisition of two aircraft to open new long-haul routes, as studies are being carried out to open up other continents, such as the Americas and Asia.
In addition, a long-term commercial program has been developed that will see the launch of new flights to the United States of America, specifically Washington-New York, in 2028.
“A new route to China will be opened next year (2025), with the aim of strengthening the economic diplomacy of the Tunisian state,” he announced.
Tunisair: Slight increase in turnover
Tunisair’s turnover increased by 2.6% to 694.536 million dinars between 2023 and 2024 (1st half), according to the quarterly activity indicators of the national airline.
From January to June 2024, the number of passengers transported went up by 2% to 1,173,948, compared to 1,151,193 in 2023. However, the average revenue per passenger (scheduled) decreased by 0.4% from 462 dinars in H1 2024 to 460 dinars in the same period last year. The load factor decreased by 2.9 points to 71.1% in 2024 (H1) compared to 74% in 2023 (H2).
In addition, the indicators show an improvement in punctuality (less than 15 minutes) of 11 points to 50% by June 2024, compared to 39% in June 2023.
Regarding the evolution of expenses between the second half of 2023 and that of 2024, the indicators published by the company “Tunisair” show an increase in fuel expenses of 8.2%, from TND 194.710 million to TND 210.759 million, due to the increase in volume consumption of 7.2% and the price per barrel of 2.5%. Staff costs also rose by 5.8%, from TND 97.406 million in 2023 to TND 103.018 million in 2024, due to statutory salary increases.
Financial expenses grew from TND 26.350 million in the second half of 2023 to TND 24.389 million in the same period of 2024. As far as debt is concerned, it records a decrease following the settlement of contractual maturities, reaching TND 720.374 million. Lastly, Tunisair had 34 aircraft in operation by June 2024.
