Tunisia: “Abida” plant resumes operations

The plant “Abida” specializing in the production of tinned food and based in Dahmani, the Kef region, has resumed its activities since the beginning of this month and has processed, to date, seven thousand tons of tomatoes, a majority were grown in Sidi Bouzid, Gafsa and Kairouan

The head of crop production at the regional commission of agricultural development in Kef said the production of tomatoes in the region for processing and estimated at around 50,000 tons per year has reached in recent days, its mature phase.

Furthermore, tomato of late season will be dedicated to supplying the regional and national market in fresh tomatoes.

For this year, areas with summer vegetables in the region are estimated at 5000ha of which 1,860ha within public irrigation perimeters and 3,140ha outside them.

Note that the production of tomatoes is one of the traditions of the region.

Hence, 1,850ha are grown each year, including 350ha of tomatoes for processing and one thousand ha for the local and national consumption as fresh product.

The plant had been closed following a labor dispute more than two months ago.
