Botswana’s national currency, the Pula, strengthened against the South African rand by 2.1 percent, according to Botswana’s October financial statistics.
“In October, the Pula weakened against major international currencies, while it strengthened against the rand,” Bank of Botswana (BoB), the country’s central bank, said Thursday.
The bank says the Pula depreciated against the Euro by 3.0 percent, US Dollar by 2.8 percent, British Pound by 1.7 percent and the Japanese Yen by 0.2 percent.
However, it appreciated against the South African Rand by 2.1 percent.
“On an annual basis (twelve months to October 2012), the Pula depreciated against all the currencies except the rand,” said BoB.
The central bank says the Pula depreciated against the Pound by 8.7 percent, US Dollar by 8.1 percent, Japanese Yen by 7.8 percent, and the Euro by 0.8 percent, but appreciated against the South Africa Rand by 1.4 percent.
In August, the Pula depreciated against the Euro by 3.6 percent, British Pound by 2.2 percent, US Dollar by 1.7 percent and Japanese Yen by 1.5 percent while it appreciated against the rand by 2.0 percent.
