Tunisia, 5th most innovative African economy in 2025

Tunisia has advanced in this year’s 18th Global Innovation Index (GII), published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), rising to 76th place and entering the top 80 with a score of 27.

Its improvement in 2025 reflects “renewed momentum and promising future prospects.”

The report highlights Tunisia’s progress, which is partly due to its strong human capital and emerging innovation ecosystems, particularly in higher education and science.

Indeed, it ranks among the top positions for graduates in engineering and science (2nd) and scientific and technical articles (17th).

Edition 2025, which ranks 139 countries on five continents, highlights that in a rapidly changing world, innovation remains a key driver of competitiveness and resilience, with rapid evolution in both its nature and geographical distribution.

Although several countries have maintained their overall positions, the report notes a diversification of the global innovation landscape, marked by the significant progress of emerging economies.

In 2025, Mauritius maintained its rank as the most innovative economy in the continent. With a score of 32.5, it remains Africa’s leader and ranks 56th globally.

Mauritius dominates the continent thanks to its performance in several key indicators, including per capita income (36th), institutions (32nd), and market sophistication (28th).

Behind Mauritius, Morocco improved and is now ranked as the second most innovative economy in Africa. Rwanda is third and South Africa fourth.

Tunisia is in fifth place. The continent’s Top 5 is completed by Africa’s only two countries with scores above 30: Mauritius and South Africa.

The Seychelles follow closely (ranking 75th worldwide), then Tunisia (76th), Egypt (86th), Botswana (97th), Senegal (99th), Namibia (101st), and Cape Verde (115th).
