Tunisia: 908,000 tons of commercial phosphate produced in Q1 2016 (CPG)

The production of commercial phosphate by the Gafsa Phosphates Company (CPG) was approximately 908 thousand tons in the first quarter of the current year while the goal was to achieve an estimated production of 1 million 544 thousand tons, recording a difference of nearly 41pc.

Officer at the production monitoring directorate, Hafedh Ben Yahya said the production of commercial phosphate in Q1 recorded an increase of over 40pc compared with the production of phosphate in the same period of the previous year which was 604 thousand tons.
Most phosphate quantities were produced at the Metlaoui, Kef Eddour and Mdhilla production units, given that production units in Redayef and Umm Larayes were virtually at standstill during the first quarter because of the sit-in observed by unemployed youth.

According to data from the production monitoring directorate at the CPG, the amount of phosphate produced in the first quarter of the current year by units of Metlaoui, Kef Eddour and Mdhilla (7 units) is estimated at 856 thousand tons while production at the Redayef and Umm Larayes units did not exceed 52 000 tons, i.e. a rate of 5.7 pc of the company’s production volume during the same period.

The production of commercial phosphate by Redayef and Umm Larayes units was expected to reach 341 thousand tons during the first three months of the year.

Unemployed people continued their sit-in blocking activity in the production units of CPG at Umm Larayes and Redayef and at the level of distribution channels in both SNCFT railways or through trucks.
