Tunisia: economy would have grown by 2.9% in 2021, says BCT

The Executive Board of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) noted at its meeting Wednesday a relatively moderate recovery of economic activity that would have grown close to 2.9% for the entire year 2021, with prospects of timid recovery for the year 2022.

The Board noted that, in line with previous forecasts, inflation continued its upward trend in 2021, closing the year at 6.6 percent, compared with 6.4 percent in November 2021 and 4.9 percent a year earlier.

The persistence of inflationary pressures was also perceptible at the level of the main indicators of core inflation, namely “inflation excluding fresh food and administered prices” and “inflation excluding food and energy” which remained on relatively high levels, 6.1% and 6.4% respectively against 5% and 5.9% a year earlier.

The Board also pointed out that the increase in consumer prices recorded by the end of 2021 will continue for longer than previously expected.

Inflationary pressures at the level of the main price components would remain particularly significant and may carry inflation to relatively high levels in the medium term, in relation to the rise of the international prices, in particular of the imported products, the move to control the expenditure of subsidy as well as the impact generated by the hydric stress.
