Tunisia: external debt servicing absorbs 92% of tourism receipts and expat remittances

Tunisia’s external debt servicing stood at 871.6 million dinars, in January 2023, posting an increase of 7.7% compared to the same month last year.

This is the highest level recorded since the 1990s, with the exception of 2019 and 2016.

This burden absorbed 92% of tourism receipts and diaspora remittances compared to an average of 106.9% over the last five years.

Estimated in dollars, Tunisia’s external debt servicing amounted to nearly 282 million dollars in January, against 280 million in January last year and 263 million in January 2021.
