Tunisia: Financial analyst proposes gradual 100-millime increase in baguette prices!

Financial analyst Moez Hadidane has proposed a 100 millime (0.1 TND) increase in the price of a baguette, about a 50% hike.

Speaking Thursday on Express FM, he argued that such a measure wouldn’t significantly affect purchasing power but could generate revenues equivalent to the annual cost of a university hospital.

He emphasized the need to rethink national priorities: “Should we continue subsidizing a product that’s largely wasted, or invest in healthcare and public transport?”

Addressing concerns of social unrest, Hadidane said comparisons to the 1984 bread riots are unfounded, as those saw prices double overnight, whereas his proposal is gradual and moderate.

He stressed that communication and public education are key to helping citizens understand that price hikes are a necessary step to improve public services and maintain fiscal balance.
