Tunisia: first floating solar power plant in North Africa and MENA inaugurated

Ms. Neila NOUIRA GONGI, Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Ms. Fatène Benhabylès-Foeth, Minister-Counsellor of the French Embassy in Tunisia, Mr. Hichem ANENE, CEO of STEG and Jérome BILLEREY, DG France of QAIR, inaugurated on June 25, 2022 the first floating solar power plant in Tunisia and in the whole North Africa and Middle East area.

Located on the Tunis Lake, the floating solar power plant designed by QAIR has a nominal power of 200 kWp, equivalent to the consumption of 390 people, allowing a reduction of CO2 emissions estimated at about 120 tons per year.

This pilot project aims to demonstrate the technical feasibility of this solution in Tunisia promoting, besides reducing energy costs, an economy of land use as well as increased preservation of water resources.

Developed by the French company QAIR with the support of Business France Tunisia, this solar power plant is financed by a grant from the “Fonds d’études et d’Aide au Secteur Privé” (FASEP) managed by the general direction of the French Treasury.

The floating solar power plant has been connected, commissioned and transferred to STEG which will ensure its operation.

The realization of this pilot and innovative project has also been accompanied by the development of a study of potential for this technology in Tunisia.
