Tunisia: food balance deficit more than doubles

Tunisia’s food balance deficit has reached 688 million dinars (MTD) in the first 5 months of 2014, more than twice compared to the same period of the previous year, when it stood at 371 MTD, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture.

This doubling of the deficit is the result of a large decline in the value of exports of food products (31.8%), amounting to 829.5 MTD from 1,215.7 MTD in the same period of the previous year.

As for imports, they decreased by 4.3% and stood at 1,518 MTD in 2014 against 1,586 MTD in 2013.

The rate of coverage of imports by exports reached 54.6% against 76.6% in 2013.
