Tunisia: fuel sector holds 63.6% of subsidies in 2022 budget

The fuel sector holds 63.6% of all subsidies directed by Tunisia under the state budget for 2022, estimated at 11.9 billion dinars, according to provisional data.

These figures were published in a document of the provisional results of the execution of the state budget until the end of December 2022, published last Wednesday by the Ministry of Finance in order to present a balance sheet on the sources of funding and areas of expenditure related to the state budget.

The same statistical data show that the amount of subsidies reached nearly 4.7 billion dinars in 2019, more than 4.4 billion dinars in 2020, nearly 6 billion dinars at the end of December 2021 and nearly 11.9 billion dinars at the end of December 2022.

Tunisia spent nearly 7.6 billion dinars on fuel subsidies at the end of December 2022, compared to 3.3 billion dinars during the same period in 2021, while commodity subsidies increased from 2.2 billion dinars at the end of December 2021 to 3.7 billion dinars at the end of December 2022.

Commodities come in second place in terms of amounts directed towards subsidies, with a share of 31.4%, while the transport sector occupies 5% of the allocations estimated at 600 million dinars (MD).

Salary expenditures are in first place in the list of state budget expenditures with a share of 41.8%, followed by interventions with a rate of 35.5%, then financing with 9.2%, then investments with 9%, and finally management with 4.3%, while financial operations are at the bottom of the list with 0.26%.
