Tunisia in favor of Libyan–Libyan dialogue

Within the framework of the Tripartite Consultation Mechanism on Libya, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt held a meeting in Tunis devoted to reviewing the latest developments in the Libyan crisis.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting examined appropriate avenues to achieve a political settlement to the Libyan crisis that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people for security and stability.

The same source stressed that the tripartite meeting reflects the will of the leaders of the three countries to intensify regular consultations, strengthen coordination and unify their joint efforts in the interest of Libya and the region as a whole.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the three foreign ministers to reaffirm that the supreme interest of Libya and the Libyan people is the main objective of this tripartite process, to emphasize the need to enhance regular consultation on the Libyan file and to support UN efforts aimed at ensuring Libya’s unity and stability.

Strengthening Libyan–Libyan economic ties

In this regard, the three ministers underscored the principle of “Libyan ownership of the political settlement process to the crisis facing their country,” reaffirming their commitment to a Libyan–Libyan solution without the exclusion of any party, under the auspices of the United Nations.

They also highlighted the importance of strengthening economic ties between Libya’s various regions in order to achieve comprehensive and inclusive economic and social development for the Libyan people.

Tunisia supports inter-Libyan dialogue

On this occasion, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti recalled Tunisia’s consistent position in favor of inter-Libyan dialogue within the framework of consensus among the various components of the Libyan political scene, taking into account the interests of the Libyan people and responding to their aspirations for security, stability and development, away from any form of foreign interference.

He also underscored the importance of the Tripartite Consultation Mechanism as a practical and appropriate framework for constructive dialogue aimed at achieving a convergence of views among the different Libyan parties.

In another development, the three ministers held a working meeting with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, during which they reaffirmed their support for the efforts undertaken by the United Nations to reach a comprehensive political settlement. They called for close coordination with Libya’s direct neighboring countries in order to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the UN roadmap.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the ministers reaffirmed the need to maintain the regularity of meetings within the Tripartite Consultation Mechanism and welcomed the holding of the next meeting in Cairo on a date to be agreed through diplomatic channels, by mutual consent among the three countries.
