Tunisia: monthly MMR stabilizes at 6.23%, March 2021

The average monthly money market rate (MMR) stabilized at 6.23% in March, after rising to 6.15% in January and to 6.23% in February 2021, according to the latest statistics published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

This rate, which was around 4 to 5% in 2016 and 2017, has experienced an exceptional increase, from July 2018 (7.25%), with the upward revision of the key rate of the BCT, to reach 7.90%, in March 2019.

The BCT had, a few months later, taken the decision to lower its key interest rate, during the months of March and September 2020, by respectively 100 and 50 basis points, to bring it to 6.25%, and this as part of its efforts to contain the impact of the pandemic of COVID-19 on economic activity, which has helped control the MMR, in recent months.
