A number of MPs have submitted a bill to the Bureau of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP) calling for the postponement of the application of Law No. 41 of 2024 on the revision and completion of certain provisions of the Commercial Code, which mainly concerns the new legislation on cheques due to come into force on February 2, 2025.
MP Maher Ktari told Express FM that the proposal concerns the postponement of the application of the new cheque until December 31, 2025, only regarding the point related to the new format of the cheque, while the point related to the reconciliation of detainees will be maintained.
He added that postponing the introduction of the new cheque format would give banks and cheque users time to prepare and find an alternative for their customers, in particular individuals, professionals and merchants who deal by cheque, provided that the alternative has the same value as the cheque.
In the meantime, alternative solutions could be found for citizens who find it difficult to obtain small loans from banks that require substantial guarantees, in particular by working on a bill of exchange for the Post Bank and a law on the “bill of exchange”.
