The outstanding amount of loans to the economy reached 118.6 billion dinars in 2024, thus recording the same growth rate observed in 2023, at 2.8%, according to the Annual Report on Banking Supervision for 2024, published on Saturday by the Central Bank of Tunisia.
An analysis of the trend in loans by beneficiary category shows a sharp increase in the outstanding amount of credit granted to public enterprises, rising from 8.3% in 2023 to 9.5% in 2024.
In contrast, the growth of credit to private enterprises remained stable at 1.5%, the same as in 2023.
Furthermore, the sectoral distribution of loans to professionals shows an increase in the share of credit allocated to the services and agriculture sectors, at the expense of the industrial sector.
Regarding loans to individuals, household debt to the banking sector totaled 29,407 MD in 2024, compared to 28,754 MD the previous year, representing an increase of 2.3% (compared to 3.1% in 2023 and 4.8% in 2022).
This deceleration is mainly explained by a sharp slowdown in housing loans, whose growth rate was limited to 0.8% in 2024.
Furthermore, the share of loans to individuals in the total loans to the economy has stabilized over the last three years, reaching 24.8% at the end of 2024. Their share of GDP decreased from 19.3% in 2023 to 18.5% in 2024.
