Tunisia: outstanding public debt stands at more than TND 107 billion at end of May

Tunisia’s public debt reached an outstanding amount of 107.65 billion dinars, at the end of May 2022, against 103.68 billion dinars at the end of 2021.

According to data from the firm Tera Finances, the public debt as a percentage of annual nominal GDP 2022 is estimated at 74.7% as of May 31, 2022, against 79.6% at the end of 2021.

The increase in public debt by 4 billion dinars between the end of 2021 and the end of May 2022 comes from the rise in the outstanding external debt by +3.3 billion dinars to 66.2 billion and the increase in domestic debt by 644 million dinars to 41.5 billion dinars.

Domestic public debt is mainly denominated in dinars (except for syndicated loans to local banks). As for the external public debt, 59.9% is denominated in euros, 23.9% in dollars, 9.2% in Japanese yen and 7% in other currencies.

By origin, 60% of external public debt is contracted under multilateral cooperation, 17.8% under bilateral cooperation and 22.2% in foreign financial markets.
