Tunisia: renewable energy accounts for 3% of energy production

Renewable energy in Tunisia accounts for only 3% of energy production, despite the great potential offered by this sector to meet the country’s needs and even to export.

This rate could be increased to 30% by 2030, according to data presented at the 3rd inter-regional meeting on the role of civil society in the promotion of renewable energy, held Sunday in Zarzis, with the participation of representatives of the governorates of Medenine, Gabes and Tataouine.

The energy transition in Tunisia is a necessity imposed by climate change and economic requirements, not to mention the opportunities offered by investment in this field, in terms of employability, as reflected in the experiments carried out in Morocco and Italy, speakers stressed.

This event was organized by the coalition for the promotion of renewable energy grouping 25 associations.

Recommendations from this meeting will be submitted to a national symposium due in December 2016 to develop a one-year action plan for the promotion of renewable energy.
