Tunisia: reported industrial investment up 26.6% until end May 2023

Reported investments in the industrial sector increased by 26.6% during the first five months of 2023, reaching nearly TND 11.5 billion, according to the Economic Newsletter of the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII).

The number of reported projects reached 1380 during the first five months of 2023, up 6.8% compared to the same period in 2022. Once completed, these projects will create 19,445 jobs, compared to 19,883 jobs in the first five months of 2022.

Significant increases in reported investments were recorded in the building materials, ceramics and glass industry (+373.6%), the chemical industry (+152.4%), the textile and clothing industry (+91.7%), the miscellaneous industry (+23.2%) and the mechanical and electronic industry (+18.6%).

On the other hand, investments reported in other sectors have decreased compared to the same period in 2022. This is particularly noticeable in the leather and footwear industry (-74.6%) and the agro-food industry (-19.7%).

It is worth noting that 61% of the reported investments in the first five months of 2023 are within the framework of creation projects, with a budget of 695.4 million dinars (MD), an increase of 76.1%.

Investments reported within the framework of expansion or renewal projects decreased slightly to TND 453.1 million, compared to TND 512.7 million at the end of May 2022. These projects are expected to create 7,517 jobs.

In the first five months of 2023, reported investments in wholly export-oriented industries increased by 3.7% to TND 527.9 million. These investments account for 54% of total reported investments.

Similarly, domestically-oriented industries recorded an increase of 17.8%, reaching TND 620.6 million at the end of May 2023.

It should be noted that foreign and partnership industrial investment fell by 23.3% to TND 259.7 million.
