Tunisia sees TND 73.8-million trade surplus in fishery products in January 2024

The balance of trade in fishery products showed a surplus of TND 73.8 million in January 2024. This surplus is 178.5% higher than the TND 26.5 million recorded in January 2023, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Agricultural Observatory (ONAGRI).

Exports of fishery products amounted to 3.5 thousand tons worth TND 96 million in January 2024, an increase of 88.2% in value and 20.7% in quantity compared to the same month of 2023.

ONAGRI also reported a 55% increase in export prices compared to January 2023 (27.6 D/KG). The most exported species are fish (2.3 thousand tons), canned and semi-preserved fish (0.5 thousand tons) and shellfish (0.45 thousand tons).

Tunisia exports fish products to 30 countries. Spain is the main importer (37%), followed by Italy (19%) and Japan (16%).

The value of imports of fish products fell by 9.4% to €22.2 million in January 2024. The volume of imports also fell by 19.6% to 4.1 thousand tons. Import prices increased by 12% compared to the same month of 2023 to TND 5.4 Kg.

Of the quantities imported, 83% were used for industrial processing (frozen tuna and anchovies), 10% for market supply and 7% for fattening.
