Tunisia: several cruise ships cancel calls in North Africa

Several cruise ships have altered their itineraries due to recent demonstrations and attacks on Western embassies and property in North Africa and the Middle East, the Daily Telegraph reported on its website.

Violent protests over a film deemed offensive to Muslims has seen cruise lines cancel stops in Egypt and Tunisia.

Last week Holland America cancelled a visit to La Goulette in Tunisia, substituting it for one in Sardinia, while Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth swapped a scheduled stop in Alexandria for a visit to Rhodes.

Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas has replaced an overnight call at Alexandria, scheduled for tonight, with stops at Messina, Sicily and Valletta, Malta.

Other cruise lines due to visit North Africa – including Celebrity Cruises, Oceania Cruises and Princess Cruises – have not yet changed their itineraries, but said they are monitoring the situation, added the same source.
