The Tunisian National Railways Company (SNCFT) resumed, on March 19, the transportation of phosphates from Redeyef after a stoppage of more than 20 months, the Ministry of Transport announced Thursday.
The transport of a significant stock of phosphates available in Redeyef, a major production site of the Gafsa mining basin (south-west), should allow the SNCFT strengthen its activities, the ministry said in a statement.
According to its website, SNCFT transports 11 million tons of goods per year, including more than 8 million tons of phosphate transported to the processing plants in Gabes and Sfax.
However, since the revolution of December 17, 2010 / January 14, 2011, this activity was often interrupted due to socio-economic protests frequent in the region.
SNCFT’s losses were estimated last September at more than 150,000 dinars per day, according to a regional manager of the company.
