Tunisia: APII records lowest number of reported projects in a decade

The Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII) received the lowest total number of projects in the entire decade 2010-2019 In the first half of this year

Indeed, investments fell sharply by 31.8% in terms of number of projects compared to the same half of the past year.

The number of jobs to be created went down fell by 14.4%, while capital costs increased by 6.1%, according to figures published by APII.

<In industry, the APII has received 1,456 projects, against 2,044 projects at the end of June 2019, for a capital cost of 1.65 billion dinars, i.e. more than a year ago (1.51 billion dinars), and a much lower number of jobs to be created, i.e. 19,549 jobs, against 23,967 at the end of the first half of 2019.

This regression is particularly significant for “totally exporting” industrial projects, the number of which has almost halved to 246 projects, compared to 392 projects at the end of June 2019.

Similarly, the number of “100% foreign” industrial projects was 84 projects, compared with 111 projects one year earlier.

Moreover, the average cost of an industrial project soared in 2020 from 738 thousand dinars to 1.13 million dinars between June 2019 and June 2020.

This surge is explained by the increase in the cost of industrial real estate and the use of labor-saving equipment.

For investment projects in service activities declared to the APII, they remain little capital-intensive with an average cost of 111 thousand dinars, compared to 1.13 million dinars for an industrial project.

The number of these projects has dropped to 3,966 projects, against 5,907 in the first half of 2019, for capital investments of 442 million dinars, down by 4%.
