Tunisia: TIA approves a 118-million-dinar tourism project in Tabarka

In the border area with Algeria, the city of Tabarka is set to host a tourism project, with an estimated total cost of 118.2 million Tunisian dinars, equivalent to over 35.3 million euros.

The announcement was made by the Tunisia Investment Authority (TIA), following the meeting of the Licensing and Permits Commission held on January 16, 2026, during its first session of the year.

This meeting is part of the authorities’ strategy to support investment, streamline administrative procedures, and accelerate the implementation of strategic projects.

The project involves the renewal and expansion of a tourist accommodation facility in the city of Tabarka. It aims to significantly enhance hotel capacity in a destination known for its natural and cultural potential, which remains underutilized.

Located in the far northwest of Tunisia, Tabarka attracts visitors with its rich coastline, forested mountains, sports activities and historical heritage, drawing both Tunisian tourists and foreign visitors, especially Algerians.

The project is particularly meaningful given the city’s strategic position, close to the Algerian border via the Oum Theboul border crossing, which connects Tunisia to El Kala, a coastal city in eastern Algeria.

This crossing point is one of the main entry routes for Algerian tourists into northwestern Tunisia, especially during the peak summer season.

Moreover, the governorate of Jendouba, to which Tabarka belongs, recorded over 115,000 visitors between January and July 2025, accounting for more than 223,000 overnight stays—an increase compared to the same period the previous year.

Despite these positive indicators, accommodation capacity remains insufficient to meet demand, especially during seasonal peaks, limiting the city’s ability to sustainably capture these tourist flows.

It is precisely this shortfall that the recently approved project aims to address: strengthening hotel offerings, improving reception conditions, and enabling Tabarka to better leverage its border positioning with Algeria.
