Tunisia: unemployment rate reached 15% in Q4 2014

Figures from the National Statistics Institute (NSI) show that unemployment has reached 15% in the last quarter of 2014.

These same statistics show a slight fluctuation in the rate in 2014. In the third quarter it was 15.1% against 14.8% in the second quarter and 15.2% in the first quarter of the same year.

The unemployment rate recorded in the second quarter of last year was drawn from the results of the General Census of Population and Housing conducted in 2014, Director General of the INS, Hedi Saiidi said at a press conference held on Tuesday in Tunis. He added that this rate increased from 14.1% in 2004 to 14.8% in 2014.

Saiidi explains the drop in the unemployment rate in the second quarter of last year, which reached 14.8%, with the recruitment of more than 23,000 university graduates to work in the population census carried out in the same quarter (April-May 2014).

The results of the general census of population and housing showed that the unemployment rate among women is higher than that among men (22.2% against 11.4%).
