Tunisia: unemployment rate slightly decreases to 15.3% in Q1

The unemployment rate stood at 15.3% in the first quarter of 2019, down 0.2 percentage points compared to the fourth quarter of 2018, the National Institute of Statistics announced on Wednesday (May 15).

In fact, the estimated number of unemployed people in the first quarter of 2019 is 637,700 of the total labor force, compared to 644,900 for the fourth quarter of 2018.

The unemployment rate is estimated at 12.4% for men and 22.6% for women. Among young people aged 15 to 24, it rises to 34.4%. This rate is estimated at 34.3% for men and 34.5% for women.

According to INS data, the number of higher education graduates is estimated at 255,400 in the first quarter of 2019, compared with 261,100 in the fourth quarter of 2018, i.e. a decrease of 5,700 graduates. The unemployment rate for this group decreased slightly from 28.8% to 28.2%.

The Tunisian labor force has reached 4.158 million people in the first quarter of 2019, compared with 4.152 million in the fourth quarter of 2018, i.e. an increase of about 5,600 people.

This population is divided into 2.956 million men and 1.201 million women, which represent respectively 71.1% and 28.9% of the active population.

In the first quarter of 2019, the number of occupations was 3.520 million, compared to 3.507 million in the fourth quarter of 2018, i.e. up 12,800.

This population is divided into 2.590 million men and 929,700 women. This represents 73.6% and 26.4% of the employed population, respectively.

The distribution of occupations by sector of activity is as follows: 51.8% in the service sector, 18.8% in the manufacturing sector, 15.4% in the non-manufacturing sector and 14% in the agriculture and fisheries sector
