Tunisia: US to give $ 100 million for debt relief

The Obama Administration announced it will give Tunisia $ 100 million in cash to help alleviate the short-term debt as the country is struggling to improve its economy after the Revolution of January 14.

This measure, which will require congressional approval, was announced Thursday by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who said that the $ 100 million will go directly to debt that Tunisia owes the World Bank and African Development Bank.

The cash transfer comes alongside a sovereign loan guarantee now being negotiated between Washington and Tunis that aims to use $ 30 million from the United States to open up access to several hundred million dollars in new financing from international capital markets.
