Tunisia: value of exports to Qatar will reach 70 MD in 2018

Trade Minister Omar Behi has predicted an increase in Tunisian exports to the Qatari market, which (exports) would reach 70 million dinars (MD) in 2018, against 50 MD expected this year.

Speaking at the end of a visit to Qatar at the head of a large delegation of 130 businessmen (from 13 to 15 November 2017), the minister said this country represents a promising market for Tunisia given the important purchasing power of its citizens.

He also emphasized the importance for Tunisia, a country that exports between 70 and 80% of its products to Europe, to focus on Qatar to diversify its markets.

For the minister, the obstacle that hinders the development of Tunisian exports to this market lies in logistics, believing that the situation requires the establishment of a permanent air freight line that can carry between 40 and 50 tons of different Tunisian products.

“There are serious demands on Tunisian products and we are working to guarantee a direct line of air freight that will boost export and control the cost,” said the minister.

He added that negotiations are currently under way with the Qatari party on the possibility of making a cargo plane available to Tunisia, adding that there is the possibility of using the two cargo planes of the Tunisian army.

CEPEX Executive Director Aziza Htira, for her part, described the results of the Tunisian-Qatari business forum as “very positive”.

The participation of this large number of Tunisian businessmen with their Qatari counterparts in the forum and the holding of a show for the presentation of samples of Tunisian products (food industries and medicines …), had a positive impact, she said, adding that the Qatari side is working to sign contracts to buy various Tunisian products.
