Tunisia: vegetable prices push up inflation to 4.6% in January

Tunisia’s inflation rate rose by 0.4 point in January 2017,compared to December 2016, to 4.6%, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said Wednesday.

This increase is mainly due, according to the INS, to the rise in prices of the Food and Beverages Group from 3.2% to 4.7% year-on-year, and particularly the growth of vegetable prices by 7.5% against 5.4% last December.

The rise in prices also affected oils (+ 10.7%), fish (+ 9.2%), fruits and dried fruits (+ 4.5%), milk and derivatives (+ 1% ).

The institute highlighted the continuation of the price increase of the clothes and footwear group (+ 6.8%), following the rise in shoes prices by 7.1%, fabrics by 2.5% and accessories by 6.2%.

Similarly, healthcare prices went up (+ 2.5%) due to higher prices for medical services by 4.2% and pharmaceuticals by 1.6%.

In addition, prices for the transport group increased 4.5% in January. Indeed, car prices rose by 10.9% while prices for public transport services rose by 1.1%.
