UAE to replace feet and yards with metre

The UAE is set to introduce a new metric system of measurement which will scrap feet, inches and yards in favour of metres.

Mohammed Saleh Badri, acting director general of the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA), announced the shift of length measurement on Saturday, according to the official WAM news agency. No date for the for when the new system will come into effect was given.

Badri said the switch to metres will apply to all official and commercial activities, especially in the real estate sector.

”A national action committee, made up of representatives of all relevant entities, will be set up to develop a plan for streamlining the shift to the metre,” he said.

The move is part of a an official decree to shift away from imperial measurements to a metric system, and follows the introduced of the litre instead of gallon for fuel, which came into place on January 1.
