Mauritania to set up a new national airline

The Mauritanian government has approved the esta blishment of a new national airline called Mauritanian Airlines International (M A I), according to a press release issued on Thursday night. Approval was given at the government’s weekly meeting, the release said, adding that the state would hold the greater part of the shares in the new company.

It said the new airline was aimed “at making up the country’s deficit in air tra nsport at the internal level as well as at the regional and international ones”.

Only one private airline, Mauritania Airways, is operating from Nouakchott. It f lies to West African countries, Morocco, the Canary islands and France. The former state-owned airline, Air Mauritanie, was liquidated in January last a fter suffering from years of mismanagement.
