Tunisia: Occupational diseases rise 25.1%

Occupational diseases in Tunisia increased by 25.1% in 2023, according to National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM) statistics published by the Occupational Health and Safety Institute (ISST).

The increase was particularly pronounced in the textile and clothing sectors, according to Mosaique FM.

A total of 3,524 occupational diseases were recorded, with musculoskeletal disorders and respiratory illnesses accounting for 90% of all reported cases.

In the clothing industry alone, the number of cases rose sharply from 871 in 2021 to 1,481 in 2023.

The governorates of Monastir, Sousse and Mahdia accounted for 51% of all declared occupational diseases, reflecting the concentration of Tunisia’s textile industry in the Sahel region.

According to an ISST study, Monastir remains the country’s leading textile hub, with 405 active companies operating in the sector.
