Tunisia: unemployment rate down 0.4% to 15.3 % in Q4 2013 (INS)

Tunisia’s unemployment rate stood at 15.3% in the fourth quarter of 2014, down 0.4% from the third quarter of 2013, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said in a press release issued Monday.

Based on the results of the National Survey on Population and Employment for the fourth quarter 2013, the number of unemployed people stood at 609.9 thousand of the total active population, estimated at 3,978.6 thousand.

The unemployment rate is estimated at 12.8 % for men and 21.9 % among women, against respectively 13.1 % and 22.5 % in the third quarter of 2013.

The number of unemployed graduates of higher education is estimated at 242.3 thousand in the fourth quarter of 2013, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 31.9 %, against 33.5 % in the third quarter of 2013, the same source added.

This rate is divided into 21.7 % for men and 41.9 % for women, posting a decrease of 1.4% for men and 1.6% for women, compared with the third quarter of 2013.

In the fourth quarter 2013, the number of employed people amounted to 3,368.7 thousand and is divided into 2,505.6 thousand men and 863.1 thousand women.

Comparing these figures with those of the third quarter of 2013, net job creations for men amounted to 10.3 thousand jobs against 17.2 thousand jobs for women.
