Tunisia: Female unemployment at 28.2% against 15.4% for men

Female unemployment is at 28.2% against 15.4% for men, indicated a study prepared by the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GIZ) on “regulations and participation of women in the labor market in Tunisia”.

The results of the study show that the female employment rate is only 24.9% against 70.1% for men.

According to manager of the program-Tunisia-economic integration of women in the MENA region, Mrs. Monia Gastli El Beji, the problem lies not in the regulations.

“Regulations in Tunisia are well advanced in relation to the laws of other countries and are not far from those in force in European countries, but the problem lies in the application of these laws,” she said…

The study showed that “the State has no clear policy for a real integration of women in Tunisia,” added Mrs. Gastli, recommending gender audit in companies to assess skills and thus ensure “equal wages for equal skills.”
