At a ceremony held, Monday, September 23, at the headquarters of the Ministry of ICT, Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo and Orange submitted their applications in response to the call for tenders for a 5G license.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Communication Technologies, Sofiane Hemissi, Minister of ICT, said that the deployment of 5G is part of “the Tunisian government’s strategy for the digital development of the national territory, which aims to develop the digital infrastructure and extend very high speed broadband coverage throughout the country”.

The government sees 5G as a means of accelerating the digital transformation of several sectors of the economy.

According to the roadmap, the licensing and commercial launch of ultra-fast broadband is planned for 2024.

5G is expected to enable new applications for mobile technology. In a public consultation on ultra-broadband carried out by the National Telecommunications Authority (INT) in 2021, the internet service provider Conect Tunisie stated that the performance of 5G technology could support the development of the following use cases: IoT (Industry 4.0, Agriculture 3.0, Smart Homes, Smart Cities, etc.), video streaming in vehicles, data exchange during major sporting and cultural events, self-driving vehicles and online games.
