Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, stated that during a working session held Wednesday in Tunis with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, it was agreed to activate mechanisms to strengthen cooperation and prepare for the Tunisian-Iranian joint commission.
Nafti noted that the meeting was an opportunity to reaffirm Tunisia’s solidarity with Iran and its support in the face of any threat targeting Iran or the Arab-Islamic region.
He added that the meeting between the two delegations reviewed existing cooperation between Tunisia and Iran across various economic, commercial, medical, and other vital sectors.
He also highlighted that Araghchi’s meeting with President Kais Saied reaffirmed the excellence of Tunisian-Iranian relations and the importance of their further development, while discussing recent regional developments and the outcomes of talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Nafti welcomed the resumption of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, believing it would help reduce regional tensions, open new avenues for crisis management, and promote dialogue and diplomacy as the path to appropriate solutions.
The discussion also underscored the importance of joint efforts to urge the international community to assume its responsibilities in protecting the Palestinian people and countering all attempts at forced displacement and efforts to eliminate the Palestinian cause.
For his part, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed that relations between Iran and Tunisia have always been strong, fraternal, and solid, and have further developed in recent years.
Toward strengthened bilateral relations
Araghchi said the visit provided an opportunity for further consultations on bilateral relations, including a lengthy meeting with President Saied and detailed discussions with Tunisia’s Foreign Minister.
He noted that these exchanges open new prospects for relations between the two countries.
He stressed a genuine shared will to develop ties, particularly in trade, tourism, medical, scientific, and cultural fields, expressing hope for continued meetings and consultations between officials from both sides.
He also announced that it was agreed to hold the Tunisian-Iranian Joint Economic Commission meeting as soon as possible, extending an invitation to Nafti to visit Tehran in the near future.
Regarding regional developments, the Iranian minister affirmed that Iran and Tunisia share convergent positions and discussed issues such as the Palestinian cause, the Gaza genocide, and aggressions against countries in the region.
He reaffirmed both countries’ support for the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, underscoring the need for Islamic countries to unite efforts and take concrete measures to end occupation crimes and counter attempts to displace the population of Gaza and the West Bank.
He also condemned the Israeli aggression against Qatar carried out Tuesday, highlighting that it demonstrates that no country in the region is immune to attacks and threats from the occupier.
