Belgium grants Burundi 50 million euros

Belgium is to give Burundi a total of 50 million euros to finance several development projects under a three-year cooperation programme between the two countries.

The release of the aid is, however, subjected to many conditions, such as the respect of human rights and freedom of speech, a statement from the Belgian embassy in Bujumbura said on Tuesday.

The effective implementation of the national strategy for good governance is also part of the conditions for the Belgian aid to its former colony.

Other demands focus on the fight against corruption, the guarantee for political liberties and fair justice.
