Cameroonian intellectual, Mr. Ngoto Wa Kariukia, on Wedn esday advocated for a “single currency” for Africa in a bid for the full realisa t ion of the dreams of the United States of Africa.
Wa Kariukia made the suggestion when he presented a paper as one of the panelist s at a symposium here on the theme, “United States of Africa”.
“A single currency is good for Africa,” he said, adding that given the expressed political will towards uniting the continent, then the need for a “supra nation a l” currency cannot be over emphasized.
According to him, such a single currency will be able to tackle the numerous pro blems associated with different and fragmented currencies of the different Afric a n nations.
To buttress his point, Wa Kariukia highlighted problems faced by travellers and traders resulting from currency transactions, especially those relating to conve r tibility.
With an African single currency, he said, economic development and integration p rocess would be greatly enhanced.
