‘Congo’s oil production dropped by 4% in 2011’

Oil production in Congo dropped by about 4% in 2011, according to the Minister of Hydrocarbons, Serge Buity Viaudo.

Viaudo said the average production of 300,000 barrels per day recorded during the year represented a slight drop, compared to 2010.

The reduction however did not have a significant impact on the Congolese economy, for wich oil accounts for over 70 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

According to the authorities, the fall in production came from such oil fields as Moho Bilondo, Azurite, Mboundi and Kitina.

To rectify the situation, the Minister said more exploration work would be carried out in deep offshore fields in the south and the inner basin of the Cuvette, an unexplored area in the north.

Currently, Congo’s annual oil production is estimated 109 million barrels.
